What Are Proverbs?

Proverbs 2:6, James 1:5

What do these sayings mean and why are they wise?
“Key your eye on the ball.” (Give your complete attention to what you are doing or want to achieve.)
“Quitters never win; winners never quit.” (If you quit you will never get what you want, but if you keep trying you will find a way to get what you want.)
“Practice makes perfect.” (Doing something over and over again is the only way to learn to do it well.)
“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” (Don’t let failing the first time stop you from further attempts.)

These are examples of proverbs: short and easy to remember sayings that call us to do something wise. They are meant to help us in sports and in life. King Solomon, the wisest man to ever live, wrote thousands of wise sayings recorded in the Bible. His wise sayings not only help us in life, but help us know God better and have a closer relationship with him. Knowing God better is the key to wisdom.

The Lord gives wisdom. Knowledge and understanding come from his mouth.

Proverbs 2:6

What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?  Knowledge is knowing what to do. Wisdom is deciding to do it.  If we don’t act on what we know is the best or right thing to do, that knowledge is wasted isn’t it?  (Coach: share an age appropriate story from your life of a time when you didn’t wisely apply your knowledge. What happened? ex: you waited until the last minute to study for a test and bombed it.)

Solomon tells us good things come from wisdom and wisdom comes from God. If we listen and apply God’s instruction to our lives, we will live better because we know God better. James, the brother of Jesus, wrote, “If any of you need wisdom, ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone. He doesn’t find fault.” James 1:5a What are some ways to seek wisdom and know God? (read the Bible, pray, go to church, talk with other Christians)

PRAY

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us and giving us good things like truth and knowledge. Help us have wisdom to live out your instructions so we can know you better and be closer to you. Amen.
